The Disabilities & Mental Health Specialist is responsible for oversight and functions of the Mental Health and Disabilities components of the program. The position is responsible for assuring the implementation of quality disability and mental health services at two Falls Church locations. This position requires a coordinated approach to implementing mental health and disabilities services that ensure full and effective participation of all children with disabilities. Included in the responsibilities is a strong collaboration with the organizations ERSEA Manager to assume recruitment activities leading to the fulfillment of required disabilities enrollment. Other duties include, but are not limited to, regulatory and legal compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations as well as the Head Start Program Performance Standards.

 

Qualification Requirements:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, early childhood education (with special education endorsement, or special education certification preferred), or in behavioral sciences.
  • Minimum of 2 years direct experience in a mental health setting providing prevention services and/or mental health services to young children.
  • Strong English oral and written communication skills (bilingual a plus).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, always maintaining confidentiality.
  • Must become CPR/FA and MAT certified within 90 days of employment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Basic computer, and mathematics skills.
  • Experience in Virginia Child Care Licensing Regulations and Head Start Program Performance Standards a plus.

The Resource Teacher/Educational Coach position requires a coordinated coaching strategy that ensures coaching opportunities for education staff that aligns with the program’s school readiness goals, curricula, and other approaches to professional development. Included in the responsibilities is the requirement of a strong collaboration with the organization’s site Education Managers to collaborate on shared goals and action planning for education staff. Other duties include, but are not limited to, regulatory and legal compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations as well as the Head Start Standards.

 

Primary Duties:

  • Implement a research-based coordinated coaching strategy at Higher Horizons, such as Coaching to Fidelity by My Teaching Strategies.
  • Identify shared goals of education staff to determine what is needed to help them reach goals, and to develop an action plan.
  • Provide focused observation of education staff; provide feedback and model effective strategies and teaching practices with fidelity.
  • Support education staff in areas of need or interest such as implementing curriculum and learning experiences with children.
  • Provide a minimum of 12-15 hours monthly of coaching for teachers in higher need.
  • Communicates educational staff the goals set towards their professional development.
  • Participate in classroom CLASS observations and workgroups to assess program needs and planning strategies for system/process improvement or development of early childhood education, disabilities, and mental health.

 

Qualification Requirements:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, child development or closely related field.
  • No less than two years of experience in a position where coaching of early childhood teachers is evidenced.
  • Familiarity with Head Start and Early Head Start Program Performance Standards and Virginia Child Care Licensing Regulations a plus.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage and coach new and seasoned educational staff effectively.
  • Understanding of My Teaching Strategies, Ages and Stages, Child Plus, Creative Curriculuma plus.
