We encourage you to participate!

From its inception in 1965, Head Start has actively promoted the use of volunteers and community resources to expand and improve operations for the benefit of Head Start children and families.

Volunteers make a boundless impact in the lives of those Higher Horizons serves because they give the gift of themselves. There’s no greater act of love than that. Your gifts are not limited by physical distance! You can make a difference by Higher Horizons has many opportunities for parents, non-parent and community members to volunteer. Areas of greatest need are the Policy Council (PPC), Family Engagement Events (including planning and review), assisting in the classroom (including reading to children and helping teaching staff with special projects), assisting with bus supervision, our Watch program and many other opportunities.

  • Policy Council: We are looking for community members to join, particularly those with experience in education, early childhood, child development, child health, human services, non-profit administration, or social work.  College students taking course work in these areas, or related fields, are also welcome!
  • Commitment: Community Representatives attend the Policy Council meetings which occur locally once per month (usually the second Monday of the month) and last approximately two hours. . Mid-year volunteers are welcome!
  • Benefits to you: Gain experience in the development of community-based services and non-profit management. Network with professionals, parents and others in the community.  Help support services for low-income children and families. Add experience to your resume!

 As a Community Volunteer

Head Start collaborates and coordinates with public and private organizations and agencies to improve the availability and quality of service to children and families in the program.

Established partnerships enhance services to ensure that the program is responding to the needs of the families and community in areas such as health, mental health, education, disabilities, nutrition and professional development.
