Every child should have these opportunities

At Higher Horizons, children share diverse experiences that prepare them for success in a global society; teachers creatively challenge and inspire young minds; and parents actively engage in their children’s future.  Higher Horizons aligns its approach to educating young children with the Fairfax County Public Schools “Portrait of a Graduate (POG)”.  This adoption of POG acknowledges that in our rapidly changing world, education needs to evolve to fulfill our mission of supporting student success in school and in life. POG prioritizes the development of skills that will empower students to be productive citizens of a global community and successful in the workforce of the future”. We also recognize that preschool children need the following skills to be successful:

  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Ethical and Global Thinking
  • Creative and Critical Thinking
  • Goal Directed and Resiliency

At Higher Horizons we help children and families succeed beyond the classroom!

The goal of the Family and Community Engagement service area is to partner with families and the community to help strengthen Head Start families.

Our primary goal is to help children maintain healthy weights by increasing physical activity while reducing the number of overweight children in the program.

School readiness and school success for children who are dual language learners are tied directly to mastery of their home language.

At Higher Horizons children ages birth to five with disabilities are enrolled in the same environment as typically developing peers, so all children can participate in the same activities and routines.

Higher Horizons ensures an accessible learning environment, offering multiple ways to access materials, engage with materials and to express themselves. We offer an environment where learning is individualized and adapted to meet the needs of all children, so they can seamlessly become a participant of the group.
Fairfax County Public Schools Special Education staff are on site daily to support the implementation of evidence-based practices to increase the academic achievement and social and emotional competence of children with cognitive disabilities based on individual needs. Special education services range from support in general education settings to specialized instruction in self-contained special education classes.

SomeHead Start and Early Head Start children may spend half a day in the Head Start class and half day in the FCPS Special Education class. This is a unique feature of the program.

The goal of an inclusive education system at Higher Horizons is to provide all students with the most appropriate learning environments and opportunities for them to best achieve their potential. All children can learn and reach their full potential given opportunity, effective teaching and appropriate resources.
