FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAM
Higher Horizons understands the importance of family
literacy and its positive effects on the community.
When parents and children work and learn together
to improve literacy, together they build essential
life skills that are crucial components of a better
economic and social future. Higher Horizons created
a Family Literacy Program through which families receive
assistance in learning to speak, read and write English.
Families come to nine-week family literacy programs
offered in partnership with the
Literacy Council of Northern Virginia. During
each class, parents meet together for English language
and literacy sessions while their children participate
in developmentally appropriate activities. The two
groups then come together for parent and child interaction
activities. At the end of the nine-week session, a
group product is created. Projects have included a
cookbook and a collection of family stories.
