Wellness Day

Higher Horizons is committed to staying healthy! On Monday, November 23, 2009, we hosted a Wellness Day for families and staff. Inova Health System provided seasonal flu shots to 24 children and 17 staff members. The Diabetes Wellness Network conducted on-site glucose testing for staff to help identify early warning signs of diabetes. Healthy snacks were provided and enjoyed by all.

Special Visitors

Coordinated with Janet Hubbell, Regional Director, Department of Systems Management for Human Services, Region 2, Falls Church, VA, in December 2009, to host graduate students from Kwandong University, Korea.

Hosted a 16 member delegation sponsored by the National Population and Family Commission (NPFPC) of China. The group visited Higher Horizons in November 2009 to learn about early childhood education and development policy making and program planning.

I CAN Help My Child Stay Healthly

Higher Horizons Head Start & Early Head Start was a participant in the 2009-2010 I CAN Help My Child Stay Healthy program sponsored by UCLA/ Johnson & Johnson Health Care Institute.

The objectives of the program were:

On January 22, 2010 seventy-nine parents participated in the literacy program. Dinner was served, prizes awarded (including the grand prize of a Dinner Cruise) and parents received the book What To Do When you Child Gets Sick, as well as a thermometer, first aid items, and Children’s Tylenol. It was through generous grants from Johnson & Johnson, UCLA and the Ameri Group Corporation as well as donations from local vendors that Higher Horizons was able to provide this important literacy training. An exciting, educational evening was enjoyed by all. Higher Horizons will Cruise into Good Health in 2010.
